Tonight only: Blues Brothers back on the big screen

Somehow this evening I ended up on Fandango's web site (I think I was checking to see if The Island was still playing in my area) and I noticed that The Blues Brothers was back on the big screen in celebration of the release of its DVD special edition. The start time for this one-time deal was already past, but apparently they simulcast a live interview with Dan Aykroyd and the other writer before the movie itself, so I hurried to the theater. When I asked the ticket person if it was too late to buy a ticket for a show that started an hour ago, she looked at me funny and then volunteered to sell it at the student rate (still a whopping $7--the _real_ reason no one goes to movie theaters these days: high prices). I got in just in time to see Joliet Jake being let out of prison. Easily got my $7 out of the deal.

Fantastic thriller--almost totally believable, but not so predictable that it feels thin. 4.5/5 stars.

Movie review: White Noise

I didn't have all that much fun watching the movie White Noise. Michael Keaton isn't serious enough to play the role that he played--Mr. Mom (and even Batman) suited him far better. Every thing else about the movie just didn't fit together very well, and the ending was completely unsatisfying. 2/5 stars.

Movie review: Cellular

I just watched the movie "Cellular". It was a pretty fun little thriller involving a kidnapping and a poor dude who gets sucked in to the whole deal just because he answered his cellular phone. Makes me even less interested than ever in answering the phone when it's a number that I don't already know. At any rate, the phone guy ends up pulling a Jack Bauer and taking the law into his own hands. William H. Macy plays a slightly kooky cop (kooky in the way William H. Macy's characters are always kooky), and there's one other character in the movie that provides better than great comic relief. For now, we'll just call him "the Porsche-driving attorney". Watch it just for him if no other reason. 4/5 stars.
